While being largely invisible, translation and interpreting activities are interwoven with political communication, both in contexts of direct negotiations among the parties involved and when the media act as a mediating agent by recontextualising political statements and documents across languages and cultures. This article examines two such episodes at times of diplomatic crisis and war.

Unlike most refugees, I wasn’t scared when I came to this country from Ethiopia many years ago. I was confused. But early on, I understood that the first thing you need to do is survive. After a couple of months in Buffalo, I moved to Houston. For three years, I worked as a waitress and did odd jobs, and then I began volunteering at a refugee center in Hillcroft, one of the most crowded places in the city, filled with social-service organizations, apartments and grocery stores and restaurants that sell food from around the world.

During the Third Summer School for Translation Studies in Africa in Lusaka in 2014, participants suggested the founding of an association for translation studies with an African agenda. After much deliberation, we are now at the point where we want to announce our intent to found such an association. We intend to have a founding meeting during the Fourth Summer School for Translation Studies in Nairobi between 29 August and 1 September 2016.

Specifically, no research has yet examined collaboration in the highly fluid and unstructured context of contemporary social and political movements.
