THE CONFERENCE The Centre for Legal and Institutional Translation Studies (Transius) of the University of Geneva will hold its first international conference from 24 to 26 June 2015. This event is organised in collaboration with the Multicultural Association of Law and Language (MALL) and IAMLADP's Universities Contact Group (UCG). PROGRAMME The conference will combine keynote lectures by Prof. Susan ŠARČEVIĆ, Prof. Łucja BIEL and Prof. Jan ENGBERG, several thematic roundtables with practitioners from over 12 international organisations, parallel paper presentations, and one poster session.

In the case of the Philippines, American colonial education imposed English as the sole medium of instruction. Native students were required to suppress their vernacular languages so that the classroom became the site for a kind of linguistic war, or better yet, the war of translation.

Sweden has long been progressive on gender egalitarianism, and now its language is officially catching up. A gender-neutral pronoun, henwill join its binary counterparts han (he) and hon (she) in the new edition of Sweden’s official dictionary, helping Swedish speakers avoid the sort of linguistic gymnastics common in languages without a gender-neutral alternative.
Efficient in a variety of situations, hen, as AFP notes, can be used when you don’t know the gender identity of the person in question, when the person is transgender, when you don’t want to reveal a gender identity, or when gender identity simply seems irrelevant in context.
