Translation

The University of Mosul, Iraq was severely damaged by ISIS during its occupation of the city, and he Central Library was burned to the ground. Colleagues have mounted a campaign to re-establish the library by sending requests to some of the world's leading universities and research institutes to donate books in specific fields. They are appealing to us in the fields of translation studies and linguistics to assist them as part of this campaign.

Hong Kong Baptist University FACULTY OF ARTS Department of English Language and Literature Professor in the Translation Programme (PR327/16-17) Full-time, Non-tenure Track The Translation Programme was established in 1990 with the aim of training sophisticated cross-cultural communicators to serve the local community and the Chinese Mainland, and has since become one of the leading such programmes in the region, in both teaching and research. The Programme is now inviting applications for the position of Full Professor, with expertise of relevance to the following Faculty-wide research niche of the Faculty of Arts: Transcultural and Interdisciplinary Classics The appointee is expected to teach and to build research capacity in at least two of the following areas: a) Buddhist translation and transcultural studies; b) translation history; c) literary translation, with a focus on premodern works and contexts; d) transcultural exchange in premodern East Asia; and e) research methodologies for historical, interdisciplinary studies.

Translator’s Introduction[1] Arwa Salih was an Egyptian communist who came of political age in the early 1970s; in the aftermath of the Arab-Israeli War of 1967, the end of the Nasser era, and the beginning of Anwar Al-Sadat’s transitional regime. She belonged to the transformative political moment instigated by the radical student movement of that decade and the political generation known as ‘the generation of the seventies’.

Call for papers As a platform for “empowering translators” (Tymoczko 2007), translation studies has developed into a discipline that encourages inclusionary approaches, culturally sensitive methodologies and agency-focused paradigms which unsettle the traditional author/translator hierarchy. However, this emphasis on the importance of “translatorship” is not always adopted within translator training programmes.

As vectors of intellectual exchanges, they are privileged spaces for the circulation of ideas. They are thus key cultural artifacts of the historical archive. Periodical publications have traditionally been considered worthy objects of study in various disciplines, such as history and literary studies— particularly in the sociology of literature.

Building on renewed interest in the author’s works in both postcolonial studies and revolutionary movements in recent years, as well as travelling theory, micro-history and histoire croisée interests in Translation Studies, the volume tells the stories of translations of Fanon’s texts into twelve different languages – Arabic, Danish, English, German, Italian, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Swahili and Swedish – bringing both a historical and multilingual perspective to the ways in which Fanon is cited today.

The Department of Comparative Literature and the Program of Translation Studies at Binghamton University seek an Assistant Professor in Translation Studies with interests in the languages and literatures of the Middle East, in particular Arabic. The ideal candidate will have a strong comparatist background or a degree in comparative literature. Teaching responsibilities will include offering graduate seminars and undergraduate courses in Translation Studies and Comparative Literature, offering translation workshops, and supervising graduate students.
