21st Century Demands: Translators and Interpreters towards Human and Social Responsibilities 27th – 28th March 2017 Call for papers Rationale - For translation and interpreting to build capacity in contemporary society, especially in the Qatari society and other societies in the Arab world, it is necessary to highlight the important role that translators and interpreters have played in the past, their far-reaching and often unacknowledged impact in the present, and the crucial promise they hold for the future.
The London-based Human Rights NGO Reprieve is looking for experienced Arabic-English translators to assist in its work on a pro-bono basis. Reprieve works on a variety of issues, from death penalty cases, to the representation of detainees in Guantanamo, to fighting for justice for drone-strike victims in countries like Yemen and Pakistan. Our work often involves the translation of legal documents and witness statements. We are currently recruiting experienced Arabic-English translators to volunteer with us on an occasional basis, either translating documents or reviewing translations by other non-professional volunteers.

In Search of Methodologies Call for Papers, 1-2 JUNE 2017, KU LEUVEN, BELGIUM Strands of complexity thinking has been challenging the reductionist, linear paradigm of Western scholarship since its (rudimentary) origins in the late 1800s. Following chaos theory in the 1980s, current complexity thinking (complexity theory) is growing in influence in the natural sciences as well as in social sciences and the humanities. Examples of the latter two categories are the work of Byrne in social sciences as well as the work of Morin, Wheeler, Queiroz and others in the humanities.

About the event Knowledge production and dissemination have long been of interest to scholars from various disciplinary backgrounds. Within the field of translation studies, the role of translation in the production, transmission and transformation of knowledge has been the focus of recent investigations by a number of research groups, including, but not limited to, the organizers of the ‘Circulation of Academic Thought’ Conference held in the University of Graz in 2015 and the research team based at the University of Manchester undertaking the UK’s AHRC-funded ‘Genealogies of Knowledge’ Research Project 2016.

Gender relations among comrades have underpinned the movement that has enveloped women’s rights in the folds of national and class struggles. In her short life, Salih was a veteran underground activist and, from 1972-73, a key leader of the most effective student movement in modern Egypt.
